Resolution - SafeLink

WHEREAS, 22 percent of Latinos live below the poverty line and lack adequate access to basic needs, such as telecommunications services;
 
WHEREAS, the current and severe economic downturn has made it even more challenging for individuals and families to afford necessary services;
 
WHEREAS, a federal government program, Lifeline, was set up to provide discounts on telephone service to income-eligible consumers;
 
WHEREAS, only one-third of those eligible for Lifeline actually use the program to help pay for their telephone services;
 
WHEREAS, SafeLink Wireless, a first-of-its-kind program available through Lifeline, offers eligible consumers a free prepaid wireless phone and a set amount of free airtime each month;
 
WHEREAS, wireless phones allow freedom of mobility and the convenience of modern day calling features that translate into greater empowerment and increased opportunities for employment and education in the Latino community;
 
WHEREAS, LULAC has always sought to improve the quality of life and increase educational and employment opportunities for Latinos throughout our nation th rough access to basic needs, including telecommunications services;
 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that LULAC supports the adoption of SafeLink Wireless in California, and nationwide, so that eligible Latino residents can attain wireless phone service, and all its benefits, without the cost barrier.
