"This young boy's mother made the ultimate sacrifice. She lost her life trying to provide a better future to her son. Today, we are calling upon President Clinton to safeguard the child's rights and act in his best interests."

Currently, Elián Gonzalez is waiting for U.S. authorities to decide his future. Elián's father and Cuban President Fidel Castro are calling for his immediate return home to the Communist nation. However, the Cuban community in South Florida and Latinos elsewhere in the United States stand adamantly opposed to the boy's return.

"The Latino community nationwide is rallying behind Elián, " added Dovalina. "He has suffered enough. "

The League of United Latin American Citizens is the oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
