CINCINNATI - Feb. 9, 2009 – Each year, the FreestoreFoodbank distributes almost 10 million pounds of food and supplies through a network of 400 member agencies in 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana in the fight against hunger. Today, Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will help ease that burden by donating more than 15 tons of protein to the FreestoreFoodbank of Greater Cincinnati.

Tyson Foods and LULAC announced the donation as part of their 1 million pound, three-year commitment to fight hunger. Tyson representatives, LULAC leadership and FreestoreFoodbank representatives attended the ceremony.

“Donations of poultry and other high protein foods are especially valuable as they allow us to provide our clients with more healthy, nutritious options,” said John Young, president and CEO of FreestoreFoodbank.  “This significant donation will help us feed our many hungry neighbors in the region during the harsh winter months and difficult economic times.”

The FreestoreFoodbank has been a member of Feeding America since 1979. One of Ohio’s largest food banks, the FreestoreFoodbank serves a population of more than 160,000 low-income persons in a twenty-county region.

“With the current economy, many families throughout the region are turning to local food banks for help,” said Jason Riveiro, LULAC Ohio. “LULAC is committed to helping our families in Cincinnati, and through our partnership with Tyson we are honored to be able to address the hunger issues caused by these hardships.”

LULAC is the oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization in the United States. The group advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.

“Tyson Foods understands that often, Hispanic families face language and cultural barriers when they are at risk for hunger and seeking assistance. Since 2000, Tyson Foods has been a leader in the fight against hunger. The company is actively engaged in food donation events and fund-raising activities year-round to benefit those in need. The protein given by Tyson today brings the company’s total in-kind donations since 2000 to more than 54 million pounds. This milestone equates to over 216 million meals donated to food banks and agencies serving local communities around the country. Last year alone, Tyson donated nearly 12 million pounds of protein to Feeding America.
