Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest and largest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country, joins Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Service Employees International Union, (SEIU) along with national Spanish media partners, Univision Communications Inc. and Entravision Communications for the largest and most comprehensive effort to inform Latinos to count in the 2010 Census.

“Historically, the U.S. Census Bureau has had a poor track record of tracking the growing Latino community,” said LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “In 2000, the Census undercounted Latinos by about one million Latinos. We want to ensure that there will be an accurate census count.”

The ya es hora¡HAGASE CONTAR! Campaign, a historic partnership of national Spanish-language media and prominent Latino organizations, will seek to enhance the Census bureau’s efforts to count Latinos through an aggressive community education initiative that seeks to mobilize hundreds of local organizations on the ground and saturate the airwaves with effective public service messages.

Partners also include impreMedia and Mi Familia Vota Education Fund.

The League of United Latin American Citizens advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health, housing and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
