Commitment to America

July 11, 2007

In recognition of the security, economic and social needs of our great country and given the divisive political environment which has befallen us, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the oldest and largest Hispanic membership organization in the country, does on this 11th day of July in the year 2007, hereby makes the following pledge to the benefit of all Americans:

  1. To defend and protect our country, and its residents, from those who wish it harm, as we have since the declaration of our country’s independence

  2. To grow and strengthen our economy through hard work and entrepreneurship

  3. Assist in the integration of new arrivals into our country’s social and economic fabric

  4. Assist in providing affordable housing and preserving home ownership

  5. Promote a healthy lifestyle to improve longevity and quality of life

  6. Provide charitable assistance in combating hunger were it still exists in our communities and in times of national emergency or catastrophic events

In recognition of the benefits of a collective effort and for all that is pledged in this “Commitment to America”, we wish the acknowledgment, goodwill and sincere efforts in the following:

  1. To be treated with dignity and respect

  2. Be afforded the same opportunities in all private and government entities

  3. Reform our existing immigration system as to implement a policy that provides for our country’s long-term security, economy and humanity

  4. A focused effort and the required resources needed to reform our failing education system

  5. Affordable healthcare for every American

  6. A comprehensive effort to reduce crime and eliminate fear in our neighborhoods and communities
